GDI officially launched in June 2025 and is a community-based, non-profit organization focused on transforming the landscape of elder care and dementia support in Grenada.

    Core Objectives

The GDI was founded by Claudia Thomas, a registered nurse specializing in dementia, to bridge gaps in the island’s healthcare system. The initiative focuses on:

    • Awareness & Education: Reducing the “fear” and stigma associated with dementia through public campaigns and training for healthcare workers, schools, and tertiary institutions.
    • Early Detection: Promoting tools and knowledge to help families identify early warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
    • Support for Caregivers: Providing respite care and resources to reduce the physical and emotional burden on family members.

    Community Hubs

The GDI plans to establish parish-based centers – often utilizing existing church halls or community centers. These serve as safe spaces for those living with dementia to engage in: Reminiscence therapy, Music and movement sessions, Arts and crafts.
